COLLABORATION

Collaborating with Eliot Bank School to design a new poster that promotes The Daily Mile within the Lewisham community

Monday 30 May, 2022

Over the last few months, we have had the honour to work with Public Health Lewisham on the Childhood Obesity Trailblazer Programme (COTP) to design a set of posters that promotes healthy eating and The Daily Mile within the Lewisham community.

As the progression of the healthy eating poster is now in full swing (see previous article for more information on the healthy eating poster), we draw our attention to our second poster of the series with The Daily Mile.

What is The Daily Mile?

The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, where children can run, jog or wheel at their own pace at school. It takes place in 15 minutes, with most children averaging a mile, or more, each day. The aim of this exercise is for children to get active whilst avoiding any unnecessary time to change into a PE kit, set up equipment or tidy up. As well as improving their physical health, it can also improve social, emotional and mental wellbeing of children whilst helping them to stay focused in school.

The objective of The Daily Mile poster

The main objective of this new poster design is to encourage Lewisham schools to sign up to The Daily Mile whilst taking into consideration their brand guidelines.

Our workshop with Eliot Bank School

To gain further research about this movement, we hosted a workshop with the year 5 pupils of Eliot bank School to get the children’s attention and thoughts on their previous experience with The Daily Mile.

During our class discussion, the children were able to tell us that they run or jog at least ten laps in the playground, in their school uniforms when they take part in The Daily Mile. According to the children, the impact makes them feel happy, strong, healthy and encourages them to get fresh air which allows them to focus better during lessons. After this exercise, we headed outside with the class and teachers to take part in The Daily Mile activity.

To finish the workshop, we discussed the most recent Daily Mile posters to get their opinion on the colours, imagery and messages used and the children designed their own posters for The Daily Mile in groups.

The children were drawn to the photographic approach as it showed actual evidence of children completing The Daily Mile. One child mentioned that by using illustration and photography together, we can create a more interesting and unique poster.

How did our work with the Children at the Eliot bank School help us?

By co-production with the pupils who have already completed The Daily Mile, we can understand their first hand user experience of how this exercise benefits them. This user research provides an essential foundation for our overall design strategy for the poster, which helps create an optimal product that has the data to back our strategy and design decisions.

Going forward, we will continue to work on our poster design prototypes that we will refine with the Childhood Obesity Trailblazer Program, Shared Intelligence and The Daily Mile over the coming weeks.

The posters are expected to be on the streets of Lewisham in August and September of this year.
